Books
about Yellowstone's Geysers and Death Valley
The Geysers of Yellowstone is Scott's "big book." Some sources call it "The Geyser Gazers' Bible." It is published by the University Press of Colorado (Boulder, CO). A completely new 4th Edition was released into distribution in July 2008. Geysers is a field guide with descriptions of every geyser in Yellowstone, organized by geyser basin, thermal group, and position along the boardwalks and other trails. thus, it is designed primarily for people who have seen the geysers before and wish to experience them a lot more. This book also includes an appendix with information about all other known geyser fields in the world (information not available from any other source). I recommend purchase via
The Geyser Observation and Study Association
, but it is also available directly from the publisher, at Yellowstone's visitor centers and Yellowstone Association, regional book stores, or of course via outlets such as Amazon. The ISBN is 978-0-87081-924-7.
Scott's other geyser book is called Geysers: What They Are and How They Work. It is published by Mountain Press (Missoula, MT). This full-color book is a primer designed to provide basic information about geyser and related hot spring activity with the hope that readers will become geyser gazers... and then buy The Geysers of Yellowstone. It is available as above. The ISBN is 0-87842-509-8.
Third is the book co-authored with Scott's wife, Betty. It is The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park and is also published by the University Press of Colorado. The book includes several chapters of history and natural history followed with mile-by-mile road log descriptions of every road in Death Valley National Park -- more than 1,000 miles of everything from paved state highway to rugged 4X4 track. The new edition has been thoroughly updated and includes 21 maps and 131 other illustrations. A completely rewritten 2nd Edition is in press and should be ready for distribution in October 2009. The ISBN of the second edition is 978-0-87081-962-9.
